Aqib Talib being placed on IR for second straight season

The Los Angeles Rams are planning on placing cornerback Aqib Talib on injured reserve, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Monday. He suffered a rib injury against Seattle in Week 5 and sat out Sunday’s loss to the 49ers. Talib confirmed the news Monday afternoon.

The veteran cornerback is heading to the injured reserve for the second consecutive season. Last year, Talib was placed on injured reserve with an ankle injury in Week 3 and returned to action in Week 13. He’ll be eligible to return to the active roster later in the season.

This news could not come at a worse time for the Rams. The team currently sits at 3-3 and has lost their last three games. Troy Hill stepped in for Talib against San Francisco and played fairly well, but the duo of Hill and Marcus Peters struggled mightily against high-end receivers last season when Talib was on the IR.

The most glaring example was when Michael Thomas torched Peters and the rest of the secondary for 211 yards in Week 9. When Thomas faced off with Talib in the playoffs, he had just 36 yards. Next week’s matchup against Julio Jones and the Atlanta Falcons will be a major test for Peters, Hill, and the Talib-less Rams secondary.

It remains unclear how severe Talib’s injury is or if he’ll be healthy enough to return to the team for their playoff push.
