Film is an important component of the Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art, and since 2006, has been curated by the gallery’s Australian Cinémathèque. For APT8, the programs have been developed into Pop Islam, Filipino Indie and a suite of films by Lav Diaz.
Co-curated by Australian-Lebanese artist Khaled Sabsabi, Pop Islam looks at the representation of Islam in contemporary film, documentary and video art, and the way these works reveal complexities of faith in orthodox and secular states.
Filipino artist Yason Banal has co-curated the Filipino Indie series, which showcases independent and experimental digital filmmaking from his nation. The series highlights the artistic turn towards documentary realism and the creation of hybrid forms of non-fiction and drama.
Lav Diaz is a leading figure in contemporary cinema and his films explore the social and political histories of the Philippines. With a poetic eye, he has explored the martial law under Ferdinand Marcos, the revolution against Spanish colonial rule and the aftermath of environmental disaster.
