Approved expansion of South Nottinghamshire Academy will create 150 new school spaces

Plans to expand a secondary school in Nottinghamshire and create 150 new spaces have been approved.

Nottinghamshire County Council's Policy Committee gave the proposals for South Nottinghamshire Academy the go-ahead on July 15 this year.

The council will also be funding feasibility studies and site surveys for the enlargement on the school.

South Nottinghamshire Academy, in Glebe Lane, Radcliffe-on-Trent, has an intake of around 750 pupils age 11 to 18, and the new expansion would help meet increasing demand for secondary school places over the next 10 years.

The Redhill Trust, which manages the school, has previously seen through an extension of the Carlton Academy.

Other plans to increase school places, which have been approved, include the expansion of Rushcliffe School in West Bridgford and £2.9 million for 300 extra school places in Gedling.

More than £500,000 has also been allocated to buy furniture and equipment for the new Orchard School in Newark as part of a £17 million plan to build a new school and day service centre in Balderton.

Councillor Kay Cutts, leader of the council, said: “The expansion of South Nottinghamshire Academy will mean that parents can continue to send their children to the school of their choice.

“It will also help to ensure that we meet our statutory duty of providing sufficient school places across the county, both now and in the future.

“It’s part of a multi-million pound investment in new and existing schools, to ensure that we meet demand for places as our communities grow, and that our buildings and facilities are up to a good standard".
