With the government dropping its controversial apprenticeship loan scheme, we thought it was a good time to look at other further education policy ideas where people would like to see the government change tack.
Apprenticeship loans for people over the age of 24 were introduced this year in April. It was soon clear that the scheme was struggling. By the end of September only 77 people had applied for a loan. The poor uptake continued and in October data was released showing that there had been just 404 applications. The government had predicted that 25,000 people would have applied by the end of the academic year.
The decision to scrap the system was announced by Vince Cable at an event to launch the London Professional Apprenticeship. He said the government had accepted that the idea hadn't worked and there was no shame in that.
The news has been greeted with enthusiasm across the sector and begs the question: what other policies should the government amend?
