Appreciate Group 'in discussions' to sell contract packing business

Merseyside firm Appreciate Group has announced it is in talks to sell its contract packing business, and the deal could be completed next month.

Last month, the gifting and pre-payment company announced plans to cease all activity at its Birkenhead site - incorporating both the contract packing and Christmas hamper business.

In a trading update to the markets on Tuesday, Appreciate, which last year changed its name from Park Group, said the potential sale for a "nominal" value would exclude the hamper business - but will secure employment "for some of our colleagues".

The statement said trading had continued to improve despite the Covid-19 pandemic, with year-to-date billings down 31% on last year.

Total billings remain "marginally ahead" of the firm's mid-range scenario, with free cash standing at £23.9m.

Chairman Laura Carstensen said: "I'm pleased that trading has continued to improve as lockdown has eased and our continued investment in transformation and smarter, more efficient ways of working have put us in a better position to handle the continued uncertainty of Covid-19.

"We remain determined to emerge from the crisis in a stronger competitive position by bringing forward our focus on existing and new digital products and delivery which we believe will help us drive growth in the long term.

"The experience of the last few months since the initial lockdown, for all its challenges, has confirmed that we have the right plan, a great leadership team and exceptionally committed colleagues and so we go forward with confidence."

The statement added that in September, the firm began a pilot of returning a small number of staff to its Liverpool head office.

But following recent Government advice to work from home again if possible, that exercise has been "paused".

"We will use the learnings to help us plan for a return when it is safe to do so. The majority of colleagues continue to work seamlessly from home."
