Apple recalls UK adapters after admitting electric shock risk

Apple is urging customers to return old UK apple plug adapters after a number of people received electric shocks.

The tech giant has admitted the three-pronged AC wall plug can create a risk of electrical shock if exposed metal parts are touched.

The plugs at risk were shipped between 2003 and 2010 with Mac and certain iOS devices, and were also included in the Apple World Travel Adapter Kit.

The company says it is exchanging all at-risk adapters for free.

Apple said in a statement: “Customer safety is always Apple's top priority, and we have voluntarily decided to exchange affected wall plug adapters with a new adapter, free of charge.”

How to identify if your Apple adapter is at risk

Apple is encouraging customers to compare their plug adapter to the images below.

The affected three-prong wall plug adapters are white, with no letters in the inside slot where it attaches to an Apple power adapter.

New adapters are white with grey on the inside portion, which attaches to the power adapter.

Apple USB power adapters are not affected.

How to exchange your adapter

Apple will need to verify your Mac, iPad, iPhone or iPod serial number as part of the exchange process and is encouraging customers to find their serial number in advance.

This can be done by finding an authorised Apple service provider, making an appointment in an Apple store or contacting Apple support.

Apple is advising customers who purchased an Apple World Travel Adapter Kit to do the same.

AC wall plug adapters designed for use in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Korea, Argentina and Brazil may also be part of the Apple AC Wall Plug Adapter Recall Program.
