Apple recalls 15-inch MacBook Pro models over battery fire risk

Apple has recalled some of its older MacBook Pro laptops because they could “pose a safety risk”.

The tech giant said the older generation 15-inch units contain a battery which may overheat.

The models were sold between September 2015 and February 2017, Apple said.

Announcing the “voluntary recall”, it said in a statement: “Because customer safety is a top priority, Apple is asking customers to stop using affected 15-inch MacBook Pro units.”

Customers can find out if they are eligible for a free battery replacement if they enter the details of their machine into the Apple website.

The Mac line of computers remains a key part of Apple’s business. In its most recent quarterly financial results, Mac computers brought in £4.2 billion of revenue.

In April, the technology giant announced a recall of some types of its plug adapters after discovering they could break and cause electric shock when touched.

Last week, meanwhile, Whirlpool was ordered to recall an estimated 500,000 tumble dryers which pose a potential fire risk.
