Apple quietly kills off highly anticipated iPhone accessory after year-long delay

Apple has quietly killed off one of its most highly anticipated iPhone accessories after the product's release was delayed for more than a year,

The AirPower charging mat was first announced in September 2017 , alongside the iPhone X, iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus.

The wireless charging system was designed to charge up your iPhone, AirPods and Apple Watch simultaneously, removing cable clutter and making an ideal bedside accessory.

AirPower was originally due for release in 2018, but the product was delayed because of rumoured issues with heat management and signal interference.

Now Apple has cancelled the AirPower product completely, citing difficulty meeting its own standards.

"After much effort, we've concluded AirPower will not achieve our high standards and we have cancelled the project," said Dan Riccio, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, in a statement emailed to TechCrunch .

"We apologize to those customers who were looking forward to this launch. We continue to believe that the future is wireless and are committed to push the wireless experience forward."

This is a rare public misstep for Apple. The project was apparently cancelled so recently that boxes of the new AirPod cases even have pictures of AirPower on them.

Apple devices - including the latest iPhones and AirPods 2 case - can still be charged wirelessly using third-party wireless chargers from the likes of Belkin and Mophie.
