Apple Mac is transitioning from Intel chip to Apple Silicon in 'historic' moment

Apple has announced that it’s transitioning from Intel chips in its Mac computers, to its own Apple Silicon chip.

Speaking at the WWDC conference, Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, described the change as a ‘historic’ moment for Apple.

He said: "From the beginning, the Mac has always embraced big changes to stay at the forefront of personal computing. Today we’re announcing our transition to Apple silicon, making this a historic day for the Mac.

"With its powerful features and industry-leading performance, Apple silicon will make the Mac stronger and more capable than ever. I’ve never been more excited about the future of the Mac.”

This change has been rumoured for several years, and was highlighted in a recent Bloomberg report, citing anonymous sources familiar with Apple’s plans.

The move to an ARM-based chip will allow Apple to make thin laptops with better battery life, and potentially quieter cooling fans.

However, the transition will likely take at least a year to implement, meaning we’ll have to wait a while to get our hands on them.

Meanwhile, several other announcements were made during the WWDC conference.

The biggest announcement is expected to be around the chips that power Apple’s Mac computers (Apple)

Most notably for iPhone users, Apple announced its iOS 14 operating system, including several exciting features.

Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering, said: “iOS 14 transforms the most iconic elements of the iPhone experience, starting with the biggest update we’ve ever made to the Home Screen.

“With beautifully redesigned widgets on the Home Screen, the App Library that automatically organizes all of your apps, and App Clips that are fast and easy to discover, iPhone becomes even more powerful and easier to use.”

Meanwhile, Apple also announced macOS Big Sur with a stunning new design, Watch OS7, and iPadOS 14.
