Apple HomePod Mini speaker unveiled - and it looks just like the new Amazon Echo

Apple has launched a new version of its HomePod speaker, dubbed the HomePod Mini.

The speaker has a spherical design and is smaller than the original HomePod, which went on sale in early 2018.

Like its predecessor, the HomePod Mini is covered in a mesh fabric and has a small display at the top.

Bob Borchers, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, said: “HomePod mini has everything customers want in a smart speaker — amazing sound for listening to music, a world-class intelligent assistant that delivers a personal experience to each member of the household, and like every Apple product, it’s designed with privacy and security in mind.

"HomePod mini is the ultimate smart speaker for anyone with an Apple device. It works effortlessly with iPhone to hand off music, answer calls, or deliver personalised listening suggestions, elevates the sound from Apple TV, plays music from a Mac, and so much more. There’s a lot of Apple innovation packed into such a small speaker, all at an affordable price.”

The speaker features a 360-degree sound experience, and is powered by Apple's S5 chip.

If you choose to buy several HomePod Minis, the speakers will sync up around your house.

Unsurprisingly, the speaker features Apple's smart assistant, Siri.

Apple explained: "Together, Siri and HomePod Mini do everything you'd expect from a smart speaker. But what really sets HomePod apart is Siri's deep integration with your iPhone.

It looks very similar to the new Amazon Echo, which was unveiled during an event last month (Amazon)

"You'll be able to ask Siri for a personal update, with a single request."

Siri can also distinguish between different voices, so multiple users can get personalised answers.

Users can choose from two colour options - a darker Space Gray model, or a bright White model.

It will cost $99, and is available to order from November 6.

It looks very similar to the £89 Amazon Echo, which was unveiled during an event last month.
