Apple fans can get iPhone handset for less than £500 - here's how

As Google has recently proved with the release of its Pixel Fold handset the cost of buying a new mobile phone can reach easily reach thousands of pounds. Those on the lookout for a new device don't have to pay extortionate amounts to get their hands on the latest software and this iPhone deal from AO proves it.

Retailer AO is offering an unmissable deal on an iPhone 12 as it slashes the price to £479, although it's not one of the latest releases from Apple it makes it an affordable option for those with not as much money to spare. The 128GB device is compatible with the latest iOS software so there's no missing out on its day-to-day smart features, just on the look.

This means users will still be able to make the most out of Apple's most raved-about features which it launched alongside the iPhone 14, whether it's the camera translation feature, customising the lock screen or live text. Plus the fact there'll be no missing out with the launch of iOS 17 later this year either, so what's the catch?

Users can also choose to take out the phone with 100GB of data a month at O2, which is broken down to £30 a month. The network also offers an 80GB a month allowance for £25 a month and an initial cost of £69.

At £479 the model is £220 cheaper than brand-new models listed at Amazon or at parents Apple. The price difference comes in with the 'state' of the phone, as it's sold 'as new' but not completely second-hand.

This fact alone would put a lot of users off but after looking at various second-hand smartphone deals there's no reason why shoppers should feel the need to pay more if all they care about is how the phone performs. And we've chosen this pre-loved device as its price includes a full year of Apple Care.

Like Amazon's second-hand Warehouse site or retailer BackMarket, the phones are graded depending on any damage or faults. Amazon for example can't resell a phone for full price even if the box has never been opened just returned to the warehouse, hence the name.

Retailer BackMarket sells a range of tech devices for a fraction of the price with XBox, iPhone, Samsung and HP featured on their site. Like this 5G S22 Ultra for £530, as opposed to its current retail price of £1,149, and it's all down to its 'fair' graded condition.

'As New’ phones are refurbished handsets that have been given a second chance. That doesn’t mean you lose out on any of that iPhone quality though. They’ve been restored by Apple, using genuine parts, and have been fully tested. Plus, they even come with 12 month's Apple warranty.

Things to consider when buying a second-hand phone

Buying a sparkly new handset is not affordable for all but we'd still want to make sure shoppers get a quality product for their money. We'd recommend looking out for these things before going ahead with a pre-loved purchase, as it'll still set you back a few hundred pounds.

  • Always check the site's condition thresholds and opt for 'good' or 'good as new' - this will determine how much physical and software damage the product has.
  • The more photos the better - shoppers will be able to zoom in on the images to see if there are any scratches not mentioned in listing
  • Is the phone compatible? - Check to see if the model is compatible with the brands most up-to-date software so iOS for Apple and Android for the likes of Samsung and Google
  • What coverage does the phone come with? - Check to see if the device is unlocked and suitable on all UK networks, this will give you more options when it comes to finding a SIM-only deal.
