Apple expected to launch iPhone 9 today – and it could cost just £399

Apple could release a brand new iPhone today with a very wallet-friendly price tag, an industry insider has claimed.

While the iPhone - expected to be called the iPhone 9 - was originally tipped to launch March 31, new leaks indicate that the smartphone will now be announced today.

Jon Prosser, an industry analyst, claims that the iPhone 9 will be unveiled on April 15 before going on sale on April 22.

He tweeted: "Per an internal meeting yesterday, Apple is now preparing for an April release. Tentative dates: Announcement on April 15, Shipments on April 22."

However, Mr Prosser added that the coronavirus outbreak means that the dates were still ‘tentative.’

He said: “Keep in mind: we're in the middle of a pandemic, and things could change.”

Meanwhile, a report by industry expert Ming-Chi Kuo, indicates that the iPhone 9 could be much cheaper than most of Apple’s smartphones.

Kuo predicts that the iPhone 9 will cost $399.

Based on previous iPhone pricing, this would likely translate to around £399-£429 for those of us in the UK.

In terms of the iPhone itself, leaks indicate that the iPhone 9 will feature a small 4.7-inch display, and will closely resemble the design of the iPhone 8.

While most of Apple’s iPhones now feature Face ID technology, reports suggest that the iPhone 9 will simply have a Touch ID fingerprint scanner.

The iPhone will be the first budget iPhone since Apple released the iPhone SE in 2016.

Mirror Online has contacted Apple for comment.
