Apple employee at Cork base tests positive for coronavirus as number of staff are sent home

Tech giant Apple has confirmed that an employee at their Cork base has been diagnosed with the coronavirus.

The case relates to an staff member at the Holyhill campus where a number of staff have been told not to come to work.

Apple said the individual who contracted Covid-19 is currently in self-isolation, CorkBeo reports.

In a statement, a spokesman said: "One of our employees in Cork has been confirmed to have Covid-19.

"We are closely coordinating with the local health authorities who feel the risk to others is low, and the individual remains in self-isolation.

"As a precaution, we have asked some of our team members to stay at home while we work with the Health and Safety Executive to assess the situation.

"We are continuing to regularly deep clean all our offices and stores and will take all necessary precautions in accordance with guidance from health authorities."

Apple issued the news to affected employees last night via an internal memo, and have also contacted staff members by phone.

It was confirmed to employees that a staff member who had felt unwell last week subsequently tested positive for the virus.

Some staff members have now been sent home or advised not to return to work today, and to self-isolate to prevent the virus from spreading.

The memo stated: "Out of an abundance of caution, we wanted you to know that we've asked those employees who were in the immediate working environment with the individual to self-isolate and not come into the office for an initial 48-hour period.

"We are also continuing our deep cleaning protocols of all office areas."

Restrictions are in place on campus for staff members who have not been sent home. The campus gym is currently closed and other restrictions are also in place.
