Apple announces £6000 Mac Pro - and everyone is making the same joke

Apple has unveiled a new version of its Mac Pro desktop computer, and it has a very distinctive design.

The new high-powered computer, aimed at designers and professionals, has a stainless-steel frame with a lattice pattern on each side, to maximise airflow and quiet operation, making it look like a giant cheese grater.

The new Mac Pro is designed and be more "modular" than the previous version, which launched in 2013 and famously looked like a rubbish bin.

It has two handles on the top and four wheels on the bottom, and the whole stainless steel frame lifts off, providing 360-degree access to the entire system.

This means that users can customise and expand their system with additional power, memory, storage and graphics processing capability.

“We designed Mac Pro for users who require a modular system with extreme performance, expansion and configurability,” said Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing.

"With its powerful Xeon processors, massive memory capacity, groundbreaking GPU architecture, PCIe expansion, Afterburner accelerator card and jaw-dropping design, the new Mac Pro is a monster that will enable pros to do their life's best work."

As well as the Mac Pro unit itself, Apple is launching an accompanying 32-inch Retina 6K display monitor, with the same cheese grater design on the back.

The monitor has 20 million pixels, delivering a super-sharp, high-resolution viewing experience, according to Apple, and over 1 billion colours for a more true-to-life viewing experience.

The new Mac Pro starts at $5,999 and will be available to order in the Autumn. The Pro Display XDR starts at $4,999. Apple has not yet announced UK pricing, but as a general rule, you can switch the dollar sign for a pound sign and you'll be in the right ballpark.

Following the announcement of the new Mac Pro at Apple's Worldwide Developer conference today, many attendees and fans to Twitter to comment on the unique design:
