Appeal launched for lunch donations for kids affected by Queen Street fire

An appeal has been launched asking for lunch donations for children of families who have been left temporarily homeless following a fire at a city centre flat complex.

An electrical junction box fire broke out at Queen Street Flats on Saturday morning.

The fire left some flats without power and water and some families are facing up to two weeks in temporary accommodation while their homes are repaired.

Dublin City Council have restored the power and water to three of the four blocks at the complex but restoring power to the fourth block is proving to be more challenging.

Local Councillor Christy Burke urged local business to donate food for school lunches to the families affected.

He said: "I'm putting out an urgent appeal for the residents of Queens streets flats who've been affected by electric faults which DCC are trying to resolve and could take up to 2 weeks.

"I'm appealing to whole sale and food store companies if they could provide groceries and lunch packs and minerals for the children. We appeal for your help in this urgent matter.

"If you wish donate any of the above we'd really appreciate your support."

A spokeswoman for Dublin City Council told Dublin Live that 15 apartments are still without power and it is expected they will be repaired in less than two weeks.

While alternative accommodation has been difficult to source, all households have now received offers of emergency housing and one elderly tenant has been offered an alternative permanent tenancy.

The spokeswoman added: "A team from Dublin City Council have been dealing with this problem since the outbreak of the fire and are working closely with all the residents involved."
