Appeal launched after 12 fridge freezers are dumped in Mansfield woodland

An appeal has been launched after 12 fridge freezers were dumped in woodland in Mansfield.

Mansfield District Council has launched the appeal after responding to the call near Peafield Lane, Mansfield Woodhouse.

The council believes it happened overnight between April 27 and April 28,. and the authority is contacting the landowner to get it removed.

It comes just hours after the government announced it is encouraging councils to reopen recycling centres across the country after a rise in fly-tipping during the lockdown.

Earlier in April, Ashfield District Council reported the "worst ever incident" in the district - sparking calls for the centres to reopen.

And Mansfield District Council also encouraged residents to be wary when doing a mass clear-out during lockdown.

The same council is now investigating the fridge freezer fly-tip.

A spokesperson for Mansfield District Council said: "We are appealing for information after 12 fridge/freezers were dumped in woodland near Mansfield Woodhouse.

"Our Community Safety team is investigating and is contacting the landowner, who will be responsible for clearing it up as it is on privately-owned land.

"It is believed the fly-tipping happened overnight on Monday 27/Tuesday 28 April, off Peafield Lane, not far from the Redbrick House Hotel.

"Did you see anything? Perhaps a vehicle acting suspiciously in the area? Anyone with information should contact us on 01623 463463."

The council has also encouraged people not to give their waste to people who offer to collect it for free or for a small charge.

The authority says this often ends up being dumped.

The council spokesperson added: "Did you know that people offering to take your waste away for a small charge often end up fly-tipping?

"If you ask someone to dispose of your waste you should check they have a waste carriers licence. You can do this on the Environment Agency website.

"It is your responsibility to make sure your waste is properly disposed of and you could be the one who is fined if your items are later found dumped by someone else.

"If you suspect someone is operating illegally or fly-tipping, you should report it to us."
