Police, fire crews and paramedics were at the scene.

The Manchester Evening News understands that passengers on board the service jumped out of the exit doors to help the man.

One passenger, who spoke to the M.E.N told of how he ran across to a nearby pub to get a blanket whilst waiting for the emergency services to arrive.

He said: "We were literally on the tram for about 30 seconds when it slammed to a stop.

"People were falling over everywhere so I knew straight away that something was wrong.

"After a couple of minutes the driver announced that there had been an incident and that the emergency services had been called.

"One of the passengers noticed a man under the tram through the window and pressed the emergency button to open the door.

"Me and my dad jumped off and aided him straight away.

"I ran over to the Sheldon pub to get a blanket for him whilst we waited for the paramedics to arrive. It was awful and so sad but just did what we could to help him out.

"The emergency services were brilliant as always. The police arrived straight away.

"I just feel so sorry for the driver and for the man and his family. It was so horrible."

Constable Karl Horner, of GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "We are appealing to members of the public who may have been in the area at the time of the collision and may have CCTV or dashcam footage of the incident.

"This was an awful incident and we are continuing our enquiries to establish the circumstances surrounding how this happened.

"Anyone with information should contact police on 0161 856 4741 or via our LiveChat at www.gmp.police.uk quoting incident 2169 of 09/12/21.

"Alternatively, details can be passed via the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."

TfGM’s Head of Metrolink, Danny Vaughan, said: "My thoughts are very much with this young man, who we hope more than anything pulls through and is able to make a full recovery, and his family.

"My thoughts are also with the driver, who is understandably extremely upset by what happened and is being supported by colleagues.

"As this collision is now the subject of a police investigation it would not be appropriate to comment further, other than to say we and the operator will of course do whatever we can to support this."
