Appeal for volunteers to help vulnerable people in Leeds during coronavirus pandemic

People in Leeds are being urged to volunteer and help the vulnerable during the coronavirus pandemic.

Voluntary Action Leeds says it is looking for "healthy and low risk" people who can help deliver shopping and prepare meals for people who are being told to self-isolate.

The group is working with Leeds City Council to recruit community care volunteers, as part of a co-ordinated response to the outbreak of the flu-like virus.

Thousands are self isolating after the government told everyone in the country to avoid "non-essential" contact with others and crowded places, and said over 70s, pregnant women and people with underlying health conditions should take "particular care to minimise their social contact".

There are now 1,950 confirmed cases of the flu-like virus in the UK, including 11 in Leeds, and more than 70 people have died so far.

In a statement, Voluntary Action Leeds said: "A coordinated effort is important to ensure that the most vulnerable people receive help and that all volunteers and recipients of support are safe.

"If you're healthy and low risk you can sign-up on our Google form to become a community care volunteer and help others in Leeds.

"The programme is designed so that people can sign-up to volunteer in a range of different roles, depending on availability and preference.

"Volunteers can sign-up to offer practical support for vulnerable people (such as shopping deliveries, preparing meals, making check-in phone calls) or can sign-up as an informal volunteer to help within their own neighbourhood in more general ways.

"Once the form below has been completed, our team will be in touch to discuss your role and match you with opportunities to help. Virtual training and guidance will be provided for relevant roles."
