Staff at the Dale Street pub posted a touching tribute to Mr Foo on social media, the post read: "Just to let everyone know that our lovely regular Steve Foo has passed away. Steve was such a huge part of the pub and meant so much to all our staff and customers. We will miss him greatly."

Tributes have flooded in since the post, with Ray Hock commenting: "This sad news has been a shock; I've been visiting Liverpool for the past 20 years (coming from New Jersey) and I always stop at the Ship and Mitre. Every year I see the same gentleman seated in the same place at the bar.

"I never approached him because I didn't want to disturb him but this year he was drawn into a conversation I was having with another patron and I finally got to speak with Mr. Foo. I found out what an interesting and kind man he was. On my last day in town and final stop at the Ship for this year I shook his hand and told him I'd see him next year....Rest in Peace my friend."

Another, Jim Gorman added: "Shocked and saddened to hear the news about Steve. Used to be in there with him, every Thursday night, prior to me emigrating. Just started "hanging one on" in honour of a very kind soul."

While a third, Ian Fazakerley said: "RIP Steve. Always a chat and a friendly smile waiting for anyone who walked through the door." And Paul Hoyte added: "Gosh, quite shocked by that news. He was such a pleasant man, part of the furniture. May he rest in peace."

A spokesperson for Merseyside police said: "Liverpool Coroner's Office is appealing for help in tracing the next-of-kin of a man from Edge Hill. Stephen Foo, aged 60, was sadly found deceased at a property on Chatham Street on Sunday 16th April 2023.

"There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death and enquiries are ongoing to locate his next of kin. Anyone who can help the Coroner identify or trace any potential next of kin should call 0151 351 0043 or email hmcoroner@liverpool.gov.uk."
