Appeal for donations to help vulnerable refugees through winter

A charity which helps destitute refugees and asylum seekers has launched an appeal for donations through winter.

Positive Action In Housing is hosting a two-day winter surgery on December 18 and 19 to provide emergency support for more than 300 vulnerable refugee families and individuals on the brink of destitution.

The group explain asylum seekers are often "tossed between destitution and Home Office support" as they await the outcome of their asylum claim.

They are not entitled to paid work during this period – and those whose claims are refused have no right to state support or housing.

Frontline homelessness caseworkers will be on hand to offer advice and practical support to service users. The group will also offer Items such as bus passes, sleeping bags, hygiene packs and essential winter gear, as well as selection boxes, books and craft packs for children aged three to 16 years old.

The group said: "In Scotland and the rest of the UK, the number of destitute and insecurely housed refugees and asylum seeking children, families, women and men has risen. Winter is the toughest time for the people we support throughout the year. It’s doubly hard being far away from loved ones at a time when families traditionally getting together for Christmas.

"With your help, we can save even more lives this winter, helping vulnerable people find emergency relief in the short term, and long term resolution."

Donations of the following will be welcomes at Positive Action in Housing's office in West George Street: Rice, pasta, noodles, fresh bread, soup tins (vegetarian), apples, tangerines, oranges, tea, coffee, sugar, female hygiene products, tooth paste/toothbrush, razors/shaving foam, anti bacterial hand wash soap, deodorants along with selection boxes, children's books and craft packs.

You can also donate cash via Charities Aid Foundation (CAF), JustGiving or PayPal.
