Appeal as Irishman left with 'life-changing' injuries after horror crash in Melbourne, Australia

An Irishman has been forced to get his right foot amputated after a horror crash in Australia.

Sean Ryan Shiner, 28, who was due home before Christmas, suffered "life-changing" injuries following the car accident in Melbourne on November 21.

The Tipperary man's parents have flown out to his side as the "true sportsman" faces a long rehabilitation.

Sean's family have launched an appeal to help support his rehabilitation costs.

His sister Denise said: "On the day of the accident Seán underwent emergency surgery in an attempt to save his right foot.

"Initial signs gave us hope that this operation was somewhat successful, but this is not the case.

"Seán has had his right foot amputated from the shin and has had two plates put into his left hip.

"The nature of his injuries means that Seán will require a number of additional surgeries along with intensive rehabilitation in the coming weeks, months and beyond.

"At this point, we are unsure how long rehabilitation will take. What we do know is that Seán is receiving the best possible care in The Alfred hospital Melbourne.

"He has an excellent medical team and has an absolutely superb bunch of friends who have rallied around him and his friends at this difficult time."

The GoFundMe page - set up on Thursday - has been met with a fantastic response, raising over €35,000 out of a €100,000 target in less than 24 hours.

Sean had planned to return to Ireland after five and a half years down under, but his plans will now be postponed.

Denise added: "He is a valued member of the Melbourne Shamrocks GAA Club and Golden/Kilfeacle GAA Club.

"Seán is also a true sports man. He has played across many disciplines with different clubs over the years, endearing himself to club mates and competitors alike.

"Those who know him will have seen him on rugby and football pitches but we all know that it is hurling and, of course, greyhounds that are his big loves!

"Seáns family are grateful and blessed that he is still here with them and we are hoping to rise adequate money to help with the enormous expenses that he will incur in the coming weeks, months and beyond to help with his rehabilitation.

"They send thanks in advance for any donations received and will keep us updated on Seán's journey to recovery."
