Appeal after man punched outside Livello might permanently lose sight in one eye

A man who was assaulted outside of a Newcastle city centre club may permanently lose sight in one eye.

An investigation into the attack is under way and police are appealing for any witnesses who may have been in the area.

The incident happened at about 3am on Sunday, December 22, outside of Livello on Dean Street.

Those responsible fled the area soon after and the 30-year-old victim was taken to hospital by paramedics.

He underwent treatment for a broken jaw and it is also possible that he will permanently lose sight in his right eye.

An investigation into the assault continues but a 31-year-old man has been interviewed under caution and remains under investigation.

Now police are trying to trace a number of witnesses who were in the area at the time.

Sergeant Craig Patchett, of Northumbria Police , said: “This is a serious assault that has left the victim with potentially life-changing injuries.

“He has suffered physical injuries but the assault has also affected him emotionally and he continues to undergo medical treatment.

“We are continuing to carry out enquiries into the incident and we know a number of witnesses were in the area at the time.

“Many of those people were filming what happened on their phones and we need to speak to them, and anyone else who saw what happened.

“This was at the end of a busy Saturday night, just before Christmas. If you were there then please pick up the phone and contact police.”

If you can assist the police investigation then contact officers on 101 quoting log 638 22/12/19 or report online on the Northumbria Police website.

You can also report information anonymously by calling independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
