Appeal after fire rips through home in suspected arson attack

A house fire in Leigh which blasted a window and spread through a living room is being treated as arson.

Detectives are urging witnesses to come forward following the fire on Scott Street on Monday morning (July 19).

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service was called out to the scene at 5.20am.

Firefighters discovered the blaze had spread through the living room of the property, and was so intense that it caused the living room window to blow out.

Crews were able to bring the fire under control before extinguishing it.

No injuries have been reported following the house fire, Greater Manchester Police says.

The force has confirmed it is treating the incident as arson and is appealing to the public for information.

Detective Constable Sean Goddard, of GMP's Wigan Division, said: "There is evidence to support that this fire has been set deliberately, and the results of this could have been so much more devastating than the material damage caused.

"This fire put many people at risk, including those in neighbouring houses.

"Our colleagues in the fire service acted quickly to ensure all occupants of nearby houses were safe and well, reporting only smoke damage.

"If you have any information that might help us with our enquiries, please get in touch with us."

Anyone with details about the fire is urged to contact GMP by calling 0161 856 7254, quoting incident number 0505 of July 19, 2021.
