Appeal after black woman racially abused in horrific tirade on London bus

Police have launched an appeal to find the victim of shocking racial abuse on a London bus.

The woman was subjected to a horrific tirade after she asked a man to stop smoking on the number 36 bus on Tuesday, November 9 around 9.20pm.

Footage of the incident, in Westminster's Bishop’s Bridge Road, shows a man lighting up a cigarette - then telling the victim: “Stop going on woman. If you don’t like it, go back to your own country. I will say it.”

A man, aged 30, was later arrested in connection with the incident and released under investigation pending further enquiries, said police, as they appealed for help in finding the victim and witnesses.

She is described as black with dark hair and pink highlights and was wearing glasses and a padded brown/khaki coat at the time of the incident.

“The abuse directed towards the victim in this case was absolutely shocking and should never be tolerated,” said Met Detective Constable, Adam Jackson.

“Everyone who travels on London’s transport network has the right to feel safe and we need to hear from anyone who has further details so we can progress our investigation.

“Any information will be treated in strict confidence and could help ensure that the person responsible for this offence is unable to cause any further harm.”

Paul Brown, a passenger who filmed the abuse, previously told the Standard he went to comfort the victim after the verbal assault.

He said: “It was a really hostile journey.

“The bus driver stopped and asked her if she wanted him to call the police but she just wanted to get going. No-one wants to hear that in 2021.”
