'Appalling' video of teenage girl being attacked posted online

Police are investigating footage of a "distressing" assault on a teenage girl in Bundaberg in southern Queensland.

The video, which was posted on Facebook on Thursday night, shows a girl being hit and kicked as she sits on the ground and others, not visible on camera, egging on the attacker.

Detective Sergeant Cameron Schneider from the Bundaberg Child Protection and Investigation Unit said he could not confirm the exact time and location, but that it took place in Bundaberg in the last week.

"The assault on a young girl is distressing, as well as unlawful," he said.

"The behaviour's absolutely appalling, given the assault on the young girl is prolonged and [if it had] continued with the ferocity, it could have the propensity to cause massive injuries to the young girl involved."

He said police had spoken with the victim, who had not sought medical attention, before the video was circulated online.

Police said they believed they knew the identity of the assailant but no charges had yet been laid.

"We're looking at recanvassing with the victim to see what the victim wants to occur," he said.

He said it was not the first time such an incident had occurred in Bundaberg and that the assault was "a concern".

"It's no offence to film the offence, but if you provide some type of active encouragement or participation, police can look at other charges in relation to that," he said.
