'Appalling' - Liverpool fans fume after VAR controversy in Merseyside derby draw with Everton

Liverpool’s Merseyside derby with Everton ended in dramatic fashion this afternoon.

The Reds thought they had earned themselves a 3-2 victory in added time when Jordan Henderson fired home from Sadio Mane’s low cross into the box – only for VAR to rule the goal out.

Despite Mane looking onside when the ball was played into him, the VAR offside lines were out and his elbow was deemed offside.

That capped off a back-and-forth encounter at Goodison Park that saw Everton twice come from behind to take a 2-2 draw.

It also saw Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford escape punishment for a reckless first-half challenge on Virgil Van Dijk, with the Liverpool defender subsequently being replaced.

That incident was referred to VAR, but only to check for Van Dijk’s possible offside, rather than a red card offence from Pickford.

And Liverpool fans were far from happy after the game.

Mane opened the scoring after just three minutes when he turned home Andy Robertson’s cross, with Michael Keane’s header from a James Rodriguez making it 1-1 at half-time.

Liverpool re-took the lead through Mohamed Salah’s 100th for the club, only for the in-form Dominic Calvert-Lewin to guide an expert header home to make it 2-2.

Richarlison saw red for an awful challenge on Thiago Alcantara and Henderson then thought he had won it in stoppage time, but VAR had other ideas.
