'Appalling' attack on GP surgery staff condemned after four injured in 'life-threatening' disturbance

Medical staff and councillors have condemned an 'appalling attack' at a GP surgery in east Manchester.

Four members of staff were injured in a 'disturbance' at the the Florence House Medical Practice in Openshaw on Friday afternoon.

Two of the victims were taken to hospital with head injuries.

A 59-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault and criminal damage, police said.

Local medical workers and councillors have now expressed their shock over the incident on social media, with one doctor saying it was 'life-threatening' for those involved.

Dr Manisha Kumar, a medical director at Manchester Health & Care Commissioning, said the attack was 'appalling'.

In a tweet, Dr Kumar wrote: "Yesterday an appalling attack happened to one of the @MHCCPrimaryCare family.

"We are sadly used to aggression but this was life threatening. This is not ok.

"Today I am angry and focused on supporting staff. Tomorrow we need definitive action."

Dr Jayne Davies, a GP in Wigan, tweeted: "This is terrible. Thoughts are with the practice team.

"No general practice staff, NHS frontline workers should have to face this."

Councillor Joanne Midgeley, who represents the Chorlton Park ward, added on Twitter: "Violence & aggression never acceptable but directed at those doing their job to care for others particularly abhorrent.

"GPs, their staff & all #NHS staff working in a system under extreme pressure & need support, understanding & most important more government funding & resources."

After the incident, a Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: "Officers were called just after 12.30pm today (September 17) to a report of a disturbance at a surgery on Ashton Old Road, Openshaw, Manchester.

"Four members of staff were injured, with two taken to hospital with head injuries.

"A 59-year-old man is in custody being questioned on suspicion of assault and criminal damage."

Following the incident the surgery closed for the remainder of the day.

Manchester Health and Care Commissioning tweeted: "Florence House Medical Practice will be closed for the rest of the day (Friday 17 September) due to unforeseen circumstances.

"The practice will reopen as normal on Monday."
