'Appalling' as motorists abuse and throw items at Clifton Bridge workers

A Nottingham MP has condemned motorists who verbally abuse workers on Clifton Bridge.

Lilian Greenwood, who represents Nottingham south, visited the condemned bridge on Friday, July 2 where it was revealed engineers on site have been receiving abuse.

The abuse ranges from verbal attacks to items being thrown at them as they work to strengthen the structure.

Clifton Bridge eastbound, which holds up the A52 Clifton Boulevard, was closed back in February last year for emergency repairs to corroded steelwork.

A third lane is soon to reopen however, alongside the slip road from Queens Road.

The rest of the work is scheduled to finish in November.

Ms Greenwood said: "Sadly whilst on top of the bridge, [I] saw for myself the verbal abuse Highways England workers face [and] hear they also get things thrown at them.

"Appalling - don’t do it."

A third lane is set to reopen by the end of September, with two open at present with a 30mph limit.
