'Appalled' judge sentences teenager for witness intimidation

A judge has warned a teenage girl he will come down on her “like a tonne of bricks” if she appears before him again.

Judge Lambert made the remarks as he sentenced the 15-year-old in Bristol Crown Court today (May 10) following her earlier conviction for witness intimidation.

Due to the girl’s age, her name and person details cannot lawfully be published.

Addressing the girl and referring to her crime, Judge Lambert said: “I was appalled when I heard of the threats you were making to that other young woman and take them very seriously indeed and it’s not just her that you assaulted - it was the justice system that was under assault.”

Mitigating, Virginia Cornwall said the girl was no longer spending time with the older teenagers whose anti-social behaviour she had been copying.

The girl was co-operating well with her mother, according to Ms Cornwall, and respected the rules laid down for her.

Mr Cornwall said: “She’s not going out at night. She’s staying at home and these are restrictions that she respects and to an extent they are restrictions that are self-imposed.”

School attendance remained a problem, however, said Ms Cornwall, but efforts were being made to boost her minimum two hours of schooling per week.

Judge Lambert decided to spare the girl jail time - the maximum sentence would have been five years - and instead imposed a youth rehabilitation order lasting two years.

The order included a two-year-long supervision requirement, a total of 20 days’ activity requirement, a curfew from 8pm-6am, and a ban on contacting a particular person.

The offence was committed in Weston-super-Mare between October 31, 2017, and May 15 last year.
