App review: Street Music Academy, crash, tap, and boom out beats with everyday objects

Parents need to know that Street Music Academy _ the rhythm in everything! uses the images and sounds related to everyday objects _ hubcaps, bottles, wrenches, etc. _ to create musical sequences. The game challenges players to reproduce the rhythms they hear on the app by tapping corresponding colored dots in time. Created for kids ages 9 to 11, there are three levels of play (easy, normal, and hard) that move kids into more complex rhythms. Kids can unlock a final concert at the end. Read the app's privacy policy to find out about the types of information collected and shared.

WHAT'S IT ABOUT?

To begin Street Music Academy _ the rhythm in everything! follow the on-screen hand that guides you through a brief tutorial. Listen to the sequence, watch the colored dots that move in time across the top of the screen, and try to reproduce it by tapping on the corresponding dots at the bottom of the screen in rhythm as they enter a gray box. If you don't follow it correctly, a red bar appears, and there are breaking glass sounds. Partial success achieves a yellow bar. Full success gets a green bar, applause, and music notes that light up on the side of the screen to show how far in the level you've progressed. After a set number of rounds of correct rhythm patterning, you complete a level and view your precision percentage. Choose from various instruments, including bottles, boxes, wrenches, and more.

IS IT ANY GOOD?

For kids who love music and rhythm, this app will likely be a hit, but don't let the graphics fool you _ it's too challenging for little kids! Street Music Academy _ the rhythm in everything! has happy, colorful graphics and animation, but they may make it look like it's for younger kids. It's actually intended for kids ages 9 to 11, and with good reason _ it's challenging! Especially for kids who struggle with rhythm or whose hand-eye coordination isn't yet on point, this may not be the ideal app to boost those skills. The yellow and red bars and crashing sound that activate when kids mess up also seem out of sync with an encouraging learning experience. Overall, kids who love rhythm and enjoy a challenge will likely love this app.
