App could show you where to find the quietest beaches

Tourism chiefs are working on a new app which could show you where to find beaches which are less crowded - with instructions on how to get there.

The app could be rolled out as lockdown restrictions are eased in the UK - with changes to England's rules set to be announced on Tuesday.

It is hoped tourism in England will start to come back online after July 4.

Visit Britain director Patricia Yates said tourism leaders are now working on innovative ways to get people back into British holiday hotspots.

She told the BBC: “We have seen some great innovation. Bournemouth is looking at an app that tells people which beaches are less crowded and signposts people to go there.

"That's the sort of innovation we need to see, and real destination management.”

She added: “It's very important for the tourism industry that they have clarity on date and clarity on what measures they will need to implement to be able open safely.

“The slightly worrying thing we see is that actually we are still quite nervous about travelling.

"Only 28% of people are very or fairly confident about taking a holiday in July and August.

"Obviously it's really important that we get that July and August business and extend it for the rest of the season.”

Wales and Scotland have said July 13 and July 15 could see commercial tourism restart. England has not yet confirmed when hotels and static caravans can reopen.

Boris Johnson is expected to make an announcement to Parliament on Tuesday.

He will also update MPs on the reopening of pubs, restaurants and hairdressers - and could announce the two-metre social distancing rule is being relaxed.
