Reported Nottingham Forest target Nicholas Ioannou withdrew from the Cyprus squad to face Montenegro at the weekend amid continued speculation about his future.
The former Manchester United defender has been heavily linked with a move to the Reds since July with some reports in Greece stating his arrival at the City Ground is a formality.
And the rumour mill continued to grind out speculation at the weekend after he missed the 2-0 defeat for his country in the Nations League.
Brescia are also said to be interested in the talented Apoel defender who reportedly pulled out of the clash because of personal reasons.
It was claimed that Ioannou informed the coach of Cyprus team, Johan Valem of his decision and his manager granted his absence.
Apoel are said to be wanting a fee of £750,000 for Ioannou who was spotted by Manchester United at a football camp in Cyprus.
He played alongside the likes of Marcus Rashford and Scott McTominay, going on to become the reserve team captain at Old Trafford.
He left the Red Devils, however, when David Moyes was appointed Sir Alex Ferguson's successor, owing to a hip problem which played a big part in him not securing a professional contract.
Since returning to his homeland, Ioannou's stock has risen considerably and he is considered as one of the country's brightest prospects.
