Aphrodisiacs, caps seized at border

Tak: Authorities have impounded scores of smuggled Indian aphrodisiacs and Korean fashion caps worth more than 13.5 million baht in total in the Thai-Myanmar border district of Mae Sot.

The seizure was announced at the Mae Sot customs checkpoint in tambon Tha Sai Luat yesterday morning. The briefing was conducted by Wallop Wuthapanich, chief of the Mae Sot customs office, and Col Asalaha Poolsuwan, commander of the 14th Infantry Regiment Task Force.

The seizure took place on Friday in Ban Rim Moei in tambon Tha Sai Luat, where an alleged smuggler drove the items to Thailand via the Thai-Myanmar bridge.

The items were 112,300 packages of aphrodisiacs from India under the name of Kamagra Oral Jelly. With import tax, they were valued at 11.2 million baht. The driver of the Isuzu D-Max transporting the items was identified as Kraisorn Kacharoen.

Found in the vehicle were also 2,200 cloth caps made in Korea, worth 1.95 million baht.

Mr Kraisorn has been charged with transporting the items into the country without customs clearance.

Mr Wallop said customs and security officials have been working together to clamp down on the smuggling of undeclared products into the country.

Col Asalaha said troops are on patrol along the Thai-Myanmar border attempting to intercept the smuggling of various illicit items. The recent seizure was the outcome of coordination between military and customs officers who scaled up efforts to combat the smuggling of the contraband goods.
