So, Apex Legends’ battle pass isn’t all that great. It’s tough when you’re inevitably compared to the excellent and generous battle passes that Fortnite puts out every season, but even by lower standards there just isn’t a whole lot to work with in 100 tiers that mostly feel like filler. At first, the Tier 100 skin for the Havoc weapon seemed like it was more of the same, but as it turns out it’s cooler than we first imagined. I don’t know that it’s enough to anchor the entire battle pass, but it isn’t bad.
The Tier 100 Havoc skin is Respawn’s first evolving weapon skin, which Respawn confirmed on Reddit and which dataminers have now seen a little bit of in-game. It’s a kind of a dragon, and as you get more kills in the game the eyes will glow and the weapon will emit smoke, going through three tiers in total. Here’s a data miner with a little preview of what it will look like.
It’s pretty cool! Again, it does seem to be the only thing worth having in the battle pass, but at least we’re moving in the right direction a little bit. Epic has done some of this with certain skins and back blings with Fortnite, but this is pretty dramatic even where this is concerned.
Overall, it does seem like Respawn is doubling down on weapon skins before character skins. There’s an obvious logic to this: Apex Legends is a first-person game, and people spend a whole lot more time looking at their weapons than at their characters. However, they come with some drawbacks: you’ll wind up using a particular weapon a whole lot less than a particular character, especially if that weapon happens to be Havoc. Focusing on an unpopular weapon seems to be most players’ biggest problem with the Tier-100, something that Respawn could have avoided by throwing a few more items on this level into the mix.
