Apex Legends developer 'pursuing several options' to crack down on cheaters

Apex Legends developer, Respawn Entertainment, said they are exploring new implementations to stop players taking advantage of cheats and hacks in the game.

Writing on Twitter Respawn said: "The Respawn team is pursuing several options to crack down on cheating..."

These options will include hiring more people for the sole purpose of finding and banning cheaters from the game, developing software that can automatically detect and stop DDOS attacks and investigating new techniques to catch and remove cheaters quickly.

A DDOS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack is a common type of cyber attack used by cheaters in online videogames which is intended to disrupt traffic to a server.

By overwhelming a server with internet traffic, the hacker effectively creates a traffic jam to that server.

When a victim is targeted by a DDOS attack, their gaming machine will effectively halt to a stop making it near-impossible to keep playing the game on their current internet connection.

Under the Computer Misuse Act 1990, DDOS attacks are a criminal offence and could result in a fine, imprisonment or both.

Earlier this month, Respawn updated Apex Legends with new measures to help protect players from DDOS attacks, they said: "Now, when we detect an attack, all players will be booted from the game and granted loss forgiveness. The idea is to deny advantages to attackers and protect victims of those attacks from RP losses.”

If you encounter a hacker or cheater in Apex Legends, EA has a report system on their website. Otherwise, you can report a player in-game when you spectate a player that eliminated you.
