REDDIT’S army of armchair investors have switched focus from GameStop to gorillas using profits from a high-profile squeeze on Wall Street to adopt around 3,500 apes.
The traders — who last month sent the share price of the heavily-shorted US video game retailer from $20 to a peak of $350 in buying raids co-ordinated on the WallStreetBets forum — have handed the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund more than $350,000 this week.
Its president Dr Tara Stoinski paid tribute by adding one of the channel’s many catchphrases — “apes together strong” — to the charity’s website.
🚨WE HAVE NEWS 🚨 It’s safe to say that the #investor community on @reddit is not traditionally who we think of as our supporter base. But they definitely surprised and overwhelmed us over the weekend. A THREAD. @CNN @CNBC @business @WSJ pic.twitter.com/JRB1Gj1Mub
