Apartments planned above Nottingham city centre bar

Plans have been submitted for new apartments above a bar in Nottingham city centre.

The studio flats would be added to the second floor above Icon: Bar and Lounge at 13-15 St James' Street.

The bar opened in May 2019, at the former premises of Bla Bla Bar in the street just off Maid Marion Way.

The apartments would be added to the upper floor of the building which is, according to the applicants, in "a dilapidated state and currently vacant".

A total of 11 single person studio self contained apartments would be added if plans are approved.

The applicants Hank Holdings Ltd state: "The first floor has not been used for a number of years and is in a dilapidated state.

"It is clear that renovation is required to bring this floor back into an active use."

The upper floors have previously been used as an office space and as part of a public house.

A noise assessment has been carried out as a lot of bars and pubs, for example the Roebuck, 101 Bar, The Malt Cross and Bar Schnapps, are all located nearby and open until late - when Covid restrictions are not in place.

It made a number of recommendations to ensure noise from outside and from Icon Bar itself remains at manageable levels for would-be residents in the apartments.

It notes that at nighttime the highest noise levels heard were from "tipping of empty glass bottles into refuse trucks and police sirens".

Music was also audible from about 9.20pm on Friday and Saturday evenings through the nighttime until about 4.15am on Saturday and Sunday morning.

There will be no changes made to Icon bar on the ground floor if plans get the go-ahead.

The application will now be considered by Nottingham City Council's planning committee.
