Apartments overlooking Aberdeen's Rubislaw Quarry get planning approval

Plans for flats overlooking the Rubislaw Quarry in Aberdeen have been granted planning permission by the Scottish Government's planning reporter.

Canadian property developer Carttera is looking to build 245 flats for rent on the northern rim of the quarry.

These plans were rejected by Aberdeen City Council's planning committee last June, but the company appealed and has now been given the go-ahead, so long as it constructs adequate parking provision, with electrical charging points and a scheme to manage water levels within the quarry.

The Rubislaw View development also includes a gym for residents, a public bistro and promenade with viewpoints.

The quarry's owner, Hugh Black, has a planned heritage centre on the south side of the quarry, opposite the potential apartments - and has previously opposed their construction.

Millions of tonnes of granite were excavated at the quarry, which closed in 1971 and is credited with giving Aberdeen its Granite City name.
