40 firefighters respond to emergency in Newcastle east end

A woman has been seen by paramedics in Newcastle after a fire broke out in a CBD apartment building.

Paramedics and firefighters were called to the former Newcastle Herald building, since converted into an apartment block, after reports of a fire on the upper levels.

A spokesperson for NSW Ambulance said paramedics were dispatched to the scene as operational support, as firefighters made for the fifth floor.

Initial reports indicate the fire was sparked in the laundry.

A spokesman for NSW Fire and Rescue said the alarm was raised about 1.20pm.

Some 40 firefighters responded, and had the fire extinguished within 10 minutes of their arrival.

Residents had evacuated the building when firefighters arrived, the service's spokesman said.

Firefighters said the precise cause of the fire was still to be determined, but emergency services remained on the scene into the late afternoon to ensure residents were safely evacuated and to clear smoke from the building.

The woman was uninjured and was understood to have been assessed at the scene as a precaution.
