AP McCoy hopeful The Queen can go close to winning The Derby in Platinum Jubilee year

AP McCoy is hopeful that one of The Queen's horses can go close to winning The Derby in her Diamond Jubilee year.

The Queen has still yet to own the winner of the Epsom classic with Aureole, runner-up in 1953, the closest she has come, but she has a live contender this year in John & Thady Gosden’s Reach For The Moon.

McCoy rode numerous horses in the royal colours over the years and says it would be special to see them carried to victory at Epsom in June.

The 20-time Champion Jockey and William Hill ambassador, said: “I rode for Her Majesty The Queen on several occasions and it was always a real honour to wear the royal colours. I was lucky enough to win on Barbers Shop at Newbury back in 2008 and it’s a win I’ll never forget.

“She’s always had great horses down the years and hopefully Reach For The Moon can become a live Derby contender. Think it’s fair to say a Royal winner of the Derby would be quite a way to celebrate The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee!”

William Hill make it 8/1 for the winner of this year's Derby to be owned by The Queen.

Rupert Adams from the firm said: “Reach For The Moon looks a colt of real potential over middle distances this year and wouldn’t it be special if he were the one to give Her Majesty The Queen her first Derby winner, particularly in the year of her Platinum Jubilee?

“At 8/1 we think there’s plenty of hope 2022 could be the year The Queen finally wins the Derby at Epsom, while we are just even-money that one of her horses crosses the line first at Royal Ascot.”
