'Anything could happen' - Bolton Wanderers defender on summer plans after loan spells this season

Bolton Wanderers defender Adam Senior admits anything could happen with his future this summer and where he ends up playing his football but believes the various loan spells have been good for him this campaign.

The 20-year-old has been out on loan three different times this season away from Wanderers in the non-league pyramid to pick up valuable experience of men's first team football.

Stints away from Wanderers have included at Ashton United and York City, before more recently being at Chorley.

He was recalled from his latest loan spell to provide defensive cover after Gethin Jones went on compassionate leave following the death of his mother, Karen.

He will not head back out on loan for the remainder of this campaign and admits he is unsure what his future holds at this point for the rest of the campaign and the summer.

But he believes the various loan spells this season have served him well and playing at right-back at times has helped him get more game time under his belt.

He said: "I take it day by day, week by week, you don’t know what’s happening. Football is a weird game so anything could happen.

"Every loan has been good, it’s helped me in every way. Obviously I’ve learnt a new position in right-back. It’s been good to play men’s football at right-back, it’s been decent.

"I’m just (keeping my options open). It’s good to play in different positions because, if you play in more positions, you’ve got more chance of playing.

"Like I said, the more positions you can play, the more chance you’ve got of playing. It’s good that we can play different formations as well.

“It’s been good when I’ve been involved (in the first team). Obviously I’ve been out on loan for the majority of the year and for a month I weren’t training here because when I was at York. But it’s been good, the training’s good, the gaffer and his staff know what they’re doing, so it’s been good.”

Senior scored the equaliser yesterday for the reserves in the Central League draw against Fleetwood Town as a strong Wanderers line-up took to the pitch at Lostock.

And the youngster believes being involved in the reserves has been good for the likes of younger players in the squad, as well as more experienced players coming back from injury, such as Gethin Jones and Lloyd Isgrove.

He said: "We just took a quick free kick, I just made a run from late because I knew none of them were marking me so I got in the back stick, it was a great ball by Liam (Gordon) and it was clever by George (Thomason).

“It’s good because obviously if we’re not playing in the first team, we need minutes, so it’s good for all our lads who played today, we’ve all got minutes under our belts. You’re doing it for yourself and people are doing it for different things.

"Geth and Izzy are getting minutes in and the injured lads, and then there’s us young ones like me and George who have just not played for a while so we need the 90 minutes in our legs.”
