Transferring money to the wrong account can be a nightmare—especially if you can’t get it back. And Bridgette (@queen_of_vase) knows this all too well.
In a viral TikTok that’s amassed 536,000 views, she sat in disbelief. The on-screen text read, “How’s your day going? I just realized I accidentally Zelled my rent to a random Alex I bought a mirror from on Facebook Marketplace instead of my Alex… and I didn’t notice until days later when he asked why I hadn’t sent rent. The guy obviously isn’t responding.”
Zelle mishap: can she get it back?
In the comments, users tried their best to help or even just relate to the situation.
“The same thing happened to my mom when trying to send me money,” one shared. “I told the guy if he returned it then I wouldn’t file a police report and the amount you sent is a felony level. May or may not work.”
Another described the situation as “weird” before addressing other commenters directly.
“To all the people saying they can’t do anything about it, most Zelles are integrated into online banking,” the commenter explained. “I can’t tell you how many disputes I’ve done for wrong Zelles or scams in general involving Zelle.”
A third commenter added, “This is why I always pay my landlord by checks. He insisted me to Zelle him but I told him I need documentation and it’s safer than Zelle in case if something happens.”
A happy ending

Fortunately, in a follow-up video, it seems like the situation was resolved. “You’re not gonna believe this, but good people exist,” she said. She then went on to explain that while she tried to call the other Alex, they didn’t seem to pick up.
She then called the bank twice. The first time around, Zelle said there was nothing it could do, while on the second one, a call agent said that while they can open up a case, it’s unlikely Bridgette will get her money back.
So, Bridgette and her Alex kept trying to call the other Alex. Eventually, the other Alex’s wife picked up and promised to talk to her husband. Later on, the husband called and drew out the cash for her (minus $50, which he had already spent on bills. However, he promised to pay the rest the next day.
“So good to know that good people exist,” she concluded. “And a lesson learned to just, like, double-check who you’re sending a Zelle to.”
