"Anyone but him" - Graeme Souness' damning verdict on Divock Origi after miss in Liverpool defeat

Graeme Souness delivered a brutal verdict on Divock Origi after he missed a golden chance during Liverpool's defeat against Burnley.

The Reds hadn't scored in their previous three Premier League matches after drawing blanks against Newcastle United, Southampton and Manchester United and failed to break down the Clarets at Anfield.

To make matters worse, Ashley Barnes netted a late penalty to secure all three points for the visitors and leave Liverpool six points behind league leaders Manchester United.

Jurgen Klopp opted to leave Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino out of the starting XI to face Burnley on Thursday, with Divock Origi and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain joining Sadio Mane in the front three.

With the scoreline goalless at the break, Origi was guilty of missing the game's best opportunity.

The striker raced onto a mis-hit clearance by Ben Mee but smashed his effort off the underside of the crossbar when one vs one with Nick Pope.

It summed up Liverpool's struggles in front of goal in 2021 and Souness was rather unforgiving in his assessment of Origi's miss.

“Anyone but him, really, if it had been any of the normal front three," Souness told Sky Sports.

"I know he’s got some important goals for them, but I did say to you, as he was going through that he’s not gonna score here. His first touch is great, second touch great, gives himself time to open the body up and he’s missed it.

"You can say if it was six inches lower, or six inches to the left then it’s a goal, but it wasn’t. He doesn’t hit it in the back of the net, it’s a bad miss.

“You’ve gone on the minutes and no goals. In the last four and a half games, they’ve had 75 efforts, Liverpool, and scored one goal.

"75 efforts - that’s not champions. I think you saw Jurgen at the end, with Sean Dyche, that’s all part of it (frustration).”
