Any Newcastle United goal tonight brings another chance for free entry to the Great North Run

There's a second chance to win free entry into this year's Great North Run when tonight's big match gets under way at St James' Park.

One free ballot place in this year's run will be awarded for every goal Newcastle United scores against Southampton in the eagerly-awaited Carabao Cup semi-final match which will kick off at 8pm. The giveaway follows a similar freebie offered at the January 24 game and organisers of the world-famous half-marathon have decided to repeat it for the second leg.

The idea to celebrate the home team's run of success, says Great North Run founder Sir Brendan Foster, who adds he has been "a die-hard Magpies fan all my life" and, like the rest of the city, he'll be willing them on in a match which has so much at stake.

It's been 24 years since Newcastle last won a semi-final to earn a place at Wembley so St James' Park and the rest of the city are already abuzz with excitement in the build-up to the action. After one lucky winner benefited from last week's 1-0 success against Southampton, there will be hopes of more to come.

One free entry will be awarded for every goal scored by Newcastle within the first 90 minutes - but the deal will not apply to any goals scored during extra time or penalties. Anyone keen for a chance of securing a freebie place needs to enter the Great North Run ballot online before the 8pm kick-off.

Those who do will be placed in the draw and winners will be selected at random from the entire list of ballot entries. Those successful will be notified via email.

The Great North Run, being sponsored by investment group AJ Bell, takes place on September 10. To enter the ballot see here.
