Anurag Kashyap recently recalled an advice given by his mentor-filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma during his initial days in the industry. According to him, it shaped his filmmaking ethos.
Kashyap recalled that after the success of ‘Satya’ in 1998, somebody was buying a house and RGV said that one film has become a success and he is buying a house. Now, his EMIs will dictate his future decisions. That is exactly what happened, the director told Mid Day.
Following this advice, Kashyap stayed in a rented house. According to him, when he kept his cost low, nobody could dictate him what films to make. He learnt that being independent is the only way you cannot be bought out.
The director also went on to add that he never took up a job because he didn’t want people to tell him what to do. According to him, if his purpose was to earn money, he would have earned a lot today. He concluded by saying that he is happy that he is getting to do what he loves.
