Antwerp suffer Rangers blow as they struggle to draw ahead of Europa League clash

Royal Antwerp warmed up for their game against Rangers on Thursday night with a 1-1 draw against Standard Liege.

Steven Gerrard’s men travel to Belgium in midweek to take on Antwerp in the last 32 of the Europa League before a return game at Ibrox a week later.

They beat Standard in both games in the group stage earlier this season and will be hoping to continue their unbeaten run in the tournament.

But it wasn’t the best of performances from Antwerp as they struggled to create much against Standard.

Congo international Niil De Pauw got his side’s only goal as an equaliser after Mehdi Marcela opened the scoring for the hosts.

But the visitors did have a goal disallowed late on that would have seen them take all three points but they do remain in second in the Belgian top flight.

They remain 13 points behind league leaders Club Brugge with Genk a further four points below them in third place.

Both goals came in the first half and it was Standard who took the lead after eight minutes.

Marcela stepped up to score after VAR had intervened to give Standard a spot kick.

But the lead didn’t last too long as De Pauw equalised 20 minutes later.

Lamkel Ze did all the hard work and then De Pauw finished off for Antwerp to make it 1-1.
