Antwerp division deepens ahead of Rangers clash as new boss set to defy ultras over rebel striker Lamkal Ze

New Royal Antwerp boss Franky Vercautern is set to clash with the club's ultras after refusing to declare rebel Lamkel Ze's career at the club over.

The Belgians are due to face Rangers in the Europa League in February but have been caught up in a bizarre row over the past few weeks.

Ze hit international headlines earlier in January after turning up to the club's training ground wearing the shirt of bitter rivals Anderlecht in a bid to force through a transfer to Panathinaikos.

He then vowed to do the same again the following day wearing the colours of domestic foes Beershot.

The stunt enraged hardcore supporters who turned up to the club's training ground two days in a row to confront the player, with riot police deployed to keep the police.

And although Ze later apologised for his antics, the ultras s decided it didn't go far enough and chose to twice confront the player, who had been banished to training with the kids.

They later released a statement demanding the Cameroon international never kicks another ball for them, but new boss Vercautern has hinted he could yet use the player in future.

He said: "He may return to train with the first team next week.

"I don't know. I suppose it depends on whether we get another visit from the fans. We look at his situation day by day.

"He played in a practice match last week and I've yet to see the footage, but as far as I am concerned he is part of our squad.

"We respect all opinions and we listen to the views of our supporters.

"But we are trying to find the best solution for the club."

Steven Gerrard's side travel to Belgium for a last 32 first leg on February 18 before a return clash at Ibrox on February 25.
