Antrim hurlers dominate Team of the Year selection after Joe McDonagh Cup heroics

Antrim hurlers have been honoured with seven places in the Joe McDonagh Cup Team of the Year after winning the All-Ireland title for the second time in three seasons.

The Saffrons claimed a thrilling 5-22 to 4-24 win over Kerry in June’s decider at Croke Park having also defeated the Kingdom in the 2020 final which was played behind closed doors.

Goalkeeper Ryan Elliott is joined in the Champion 15 by defenders Joe Maskey, Gerard Walsh and Eoghan Campbell with midfielder Keelan Molloy also included with Conal Cunning and Ciaran Clarke in the forwards.

Down attacker Daithi Sands also included in the selection with beaten McDonagh Cup finalists Kerry picking up four awards for Fionan Mackessy, Eoin Ross, Mickey Boyle and Pádraig Boyle.

Carlow duo Chis Nolan and Martin Kavanagh and Offaly’s David Nally make up the remainder of the All Star selection.

The awards will be presented to the players at a function at Croke Park on Friday night when the recipients of the Ring/Rackard/Meagher All Stars will also be honoured.

The Tailteann Cup Team of the Year will also be confirmed at the ceremony and the Player of the Year from all competitions will be announced.

The 2022 Senior Football and Hurling All Stars will be announced next week.
