Antrim Coast Half Marathon organisers cut entries due to concerns

Next month's P&O Antrim Coast Half Marathon has been reduced to an 'elite' race due to concerns over the potential spread of Covid-19.

The hugely popular event will be held on September 12 but now involve less than 80 runners.

Organising club Larne AC said they had listened to the concerns of local traders and the community and decided that a mass race will no longer take place.

The reduced capacity race will be held subject to medical and scientific advice and with a "robust Covid-19 hygiene policy".

"These measures exceed what has been recommended by Run Britain and Athletics NI," said Race Director William Thompson in a statement.

"The mass participation race, together with a new elite line up, will be rescheduled for September 2021, all participants will now be entered into this race automatically and will be emailed with more information when plans are confirmed.

"Larne Athletic Club promise to deliver an even bigger and better event next year.

"The organisers wish to thank everyone for their support and understanding at this time."

It is understood next month's event will include Covid-19 testing for all participants and staggered starts.

There will also be an rarlier race time (8am-9.30am).
