Antrim and Newtownabbey councillor who stood down replaced by Alliance Party with her husband

An Alliance councillor who stepped down has been replaced by the party with her husband.

Victoria McAuley recently stood down from her elected role on Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council.

Her husband Andrew McAuley has been co-opted by the Alliance Party to fill the vacancy.

His appointment was confirmed by the Electoral Office and his name has been added to the council's website.

Ms McAuley topped the poll when she was elected to the council in 2019 as a representative of the Airport electoral area.

The Alliance Party said Mr McAuley was selected in line with internal processes.

It said the local association held a selection meeting and Mr McAuley chosen out of four candidates.

Alliance is the third-largest party grouping on Antrim and Newtownabbey council with seven seats.

There have been more than 20 councillor co-options across Northern Ireland's councils since the last local government election in May 2019.
